The Korean 10 Steps Routine

The Korean 10-Step Skincare Routine

Koreans are known for their radiant and youthful skin, often attributed to genetics. However, their flawless complexion is largely the result of a dedicated skincare routine consisting of up to ten steps. While this may sound excessive, the key lies in adapting it to your skin’s specific needs.

This routine is designed to be flexible. In winter, when the skin tends to be drier, additional hydration steps may be beneficial. In summer, a lighter routine may be sufficient. The most important factor is consistency—once you see the results, you’ll understand why this routine is so popular worldwide.

A general guideline is to apply products from the lightest, most watery textures to the thickest, richest formulas, ensuring optimal hydration and absorption of nutrients. Not all products are used at the same time of day. Below, you will find whether each step is best suited for morning, evening, or both.

Step 1 – Oil-Based Cleansing (Evening, optional Morning)

An oil-based cleanser is the best way to remove oil-based impurities such as makeup, sunscreen, and excess sebum. Since water repels oil, this step ensures a deeper cleanse.

How to use:

  • Apply a small amount of cleansing oil to dry skin and gently massage in upward circular motions.
  • Add a little water to emulsify the oil, turning it into a milky consistency.
  • Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.

Common myth: Many believe oil cleansers cause breakouts, but they actually help dissolve excess sebum and deep-set impurities.

Step 2 – Water-Based Cleansing (Morning & Evening)

This second cleansing step removes any remaining water-based debris, such as sweat and dust, that oil cleansers may not fully eliminate.

How to use:

  • Apply a foaming or cream cleanser to damp skin.
  • Massage gently in upward circular motions.
  • Rinse with lukewarm water.

For best results, repeat this step morning and evening.

Step 3 – Exfoliation (1-2 times per week, preferably Evening)

Exfoliate 1-2 times per week to remove dead skin cells, unclog pores, and enhance the absorption of subsequent skincare products.

Choose a gentle exfoliant that does not irritate the skin and respects the natural skin barrier. Use it in the evening, allowing your skin to recover overnight without immediate sun exposure.

Step 4 – Toner (Morning & Evening)

Unlike traditional Western toners, which often strip the skin, Korean toners are designed to restore pH balance while hydrating and nourishing the skin.

How to use:

  • Pour a few drops into your hands and gently pat onto the skin.
  • Optionally, use a cotton pad for extra freshness.

This step prepares the skin for the rest of the routine, ensuring better product absorption.

Step 5 – Essence (Morning & Evening)

Essences are lighter and less concentrated than serums. Their primary function is to provide deep hydration and stimulate skin renewal.

Think of an essence as a hydrating booster that enhances the effectiveness of the following steps.

Step 6 – Serums & Ampoules (Morning & Evening, depending on skin needs)

Serums and ampoules contain highly concentrated active ingredients that target specific skin concerns, such as:

  • Morning: Antioxidant serums like vitamin C to protect against free radicals.
  • Evening: Restorative serums like collagen or niacinamide to regenerate the skin.

Choose a serum that matches your skin needs and gently press it into the skin for optimal absorption.

Step 7 – Sheet Masks (1-2 times per week, Any time of day)

Sheet masks provide a concentrated dose of nourishment and hydration, making them a luxurious but effective addition to your routine.

How to use:

  • Choose a mask based on your skin’s needs (hydrating, brightening, soothing).
  • Apply it to your face and leave it on for 10-20 minutes.
  • Remove the mask and gently pat in the remaining serum—no need to rinse.

Use sheet masks whenever your skin needs extra care, whether weekly or daily.

Step 8 – Eye Cream (Morning & Evening)

The skin around the eyes is thinner and more prone to dryness, making a specialized eye cream essential for hydration and protection.

Apply a small amount using your ring finger to avoid excessive pressure on the delicate skin.

Step 9 – Moisturizer / Sleeping Mask (Morning & Evening, adapted to skin type)

A moisturizer or sleeping mask acts as a protective barrier, sealing in all previous steps to keep the skin hydrated.

  • Morning: A lightweight, hydrating moisturizer that absorbs quickly.
  • Evening: A richer cream or sleeping mask for extra nourishment and overnight repair.

Step 10 – Sunscreen (Morning Only)

The most important anti-aging step is daily sun protection. UV exposure is the leading cause of wrinkles and pigmentation, making SPF an essential part of your routine.

Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning, regardless of the weather.

Summary

This routine isn’t about blindly following ten steps, but rather understanding your skin and adapting your routine as needed. Some days, your skin may require extra hydration, while on others, you may skip exfoliation or certain layers.

By following this routine, you work with your skin rather than against it, achieving a long-lasting radiant and healthy complexion.
